Minecraft now requirpes 16GB system memory

Minecraft Java Edition raises recommended memory to 16GB ahead of Vulkan transition

Mojang has updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition, raising recommended system memory from 4GB to 16GB. The minimum is now 8GB with a dedicated GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics. The recommended GPU tier starts with the GeForce RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT or Intel Arc A580.

The 16GB figure refers to total system memory, not memory allocated only to Minecraft. Java Edition now reserves 4GB by default, while the remaining capacity is used by the operating system, launcher, background software and integrated graphics.

The previous system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition were based on older hardware and older graphics technology. While those specs may have reflected what Minecraft needed in the past, they no longer represent what the game needs to run well today.

Minecraft Java Edition raises recommended memory to 16GB ahead of Vulkan transition

Java and other Editions

Minecraft has two main PC editions. Java Edition is the original Windows, Linux and macOS version with broad mod and custom server support. Bedrock Edition runs across PC, consoles and mobile devices, with cross-platform multiplayer and the separate RenderDragon graphics engine.

Java is receiving the larger requirements update because it still relies on OpenGL. Mojang added an experimental Vulkan renderer in Minecraft Java Edition 26.2, released on June 16, 2026. OpenGL remains available for now, but Mojang plans to remove it once Vulkan reaches the required stability and performance levels.

The Vulkan transition also prepares Java Edition for Vibrant Visuals. The graphics update is already available in Bedrock Edition and adds improved lighting, shadows, reflective water and volumetric effects. Mojang has not confirmed when the full feature set will arrive in Java Edition.

New Requirements

Mojang updated the Java Edition requirements on July 21, 2026. The new minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS using the Fast preset. The recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS using the Fancy preset.
